. A handmade 'Peace for Ukraine' banner is carried at the Ukrainian Independence Day solidarity gathering in St Peter's Square, Manchester, on Saturday 22 August 2026. Ukraine marks independence on 24 August, commemorating the 1991 declaration that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, and diaspora communities often hold weekend marches and public events close to the date. In 2026 the celebration remained inseparable from Russia's continuing invasion and the human cost of war, so blue-and-yellow flags and peace messages functioned both as national symbols and as political statements of solidarity. Manchester has a substantial Ukrainian community and has hosted repeated rallies, vigils, fundraising events and demonstrations since the full-scale Russian invasion began in February 2022. The photograph records civic protest in a central public square used for political gatherings, remembrance and celebration. It is suitable for editorial coverage of Ukraine, diaspora identity, anti-war activism, European security, refugees, independence commemorations and public support for a country under attack. The picture has additional value for regional coverage because it is rooted in a specific North West setting rather than anonymous stock. Relevant search and editorial concepts include Ukraine, Ukrainian, Manchester, solidarity, independence, blue and yellow, peace, protest, diaspora, Russia invasion, Europe, freedom, public demonstration, civic square. Useful descriptive vocabulary for archive discovery includes Peace, for, Ukraine, Manchester, Ukrainian, Independence, Day, August, solidarity, march, St, Peters, Square, flag, protest, Russia, invasion, peace, banner, diaspora. As a visual record it preserves ordinary details that formal reports often omit, including the condition, presentation and day-to-day setting of the subject at the time of photography. Its value is strongest when used with precise place and date information,
