Notre Dame Cathedral interior, Paris, France
Altre informazioni:
Notre Dame cathedral in Paris before the fire of 2019. Building of the cathedral started in the 12th Century. Most of the building is of stone but considerable parts, including the roof and spire were of wood and presented a fire risk. The Paris Fire Brigade had plans for emergency fire at the cathedral. In 2018 they carried out on-site exercises there. A firefighter was posted to the cathedral every day and fire wardens checked conditions beneath the roof three times daily. The fire of 2019 is believed to have been started accidentally either by a worker discarding a still-burning cigarette or by an electrical short circuit. The fire destroyed two thirds of the roof. Many art works and treasures had previously been moved out of the cathedral in preparation for renovation work. Other items were moved by human chain during the fire. As a result no major artwork or religious relic was lost. The cathedral housed a crown of thorns said to be the one Jesus wore at his crucifixion and a piece of the cross on which he was crucified.
