Helmsley is a market town and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the River Rye, at the junction of the A170 and the B1257 and both the Cleveland Way and Ebor Way begin here. The town sits on the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park which passes through Helmsley along the A170 road - the western part of the town is therefore within the National Park. It is in fact, the only market town in the North York Moors National Park! Helmsley is full of history - there are 51 listed buildings (including the12th century ruins of Helmsley Castle with Tudor Manor in the care of English Heritage and the Duncombe Park Estate). In 2015 it was crowned best market town high street in Britain. This is a view taken from Castlegate, looking across Borough Beck which flows southwards through the town from the moors, joining the River Rye at Rye Bridge. The Helmsley Jet works (in Barkers Yard) is a family run jewellery shop specializing in hand crafted pieces made from Whitby jet and Derbyshire Blue John. All the jewellery is made on the premises.
