Descrizione in inglese
It was for a long time uncertain whether Foinaven, a spectacular and challenging mountain in remote Northwest Sutherland, should be classified as a Munro (over 3000 ft) or a Corbett (between 2500 ft and 3000 ft), as surveys had been unable to establish accurately which side of 3000 ft the true height was. However in 2007 the Munro Society commisioned a new survey of Foinaven, which established definitively that the height was 911 metres, ie just below 3000 ft. So although its grandeur and complexity would make it well worthy of Munro status, Foinaven is now definitely included in the Corbett classification. The Cambrian quartzite on the upper slopes of Foinaven, which overlays the much older Lewisian gneiss, gives this remote Sutherland mountain its distinctively white, seemingly snow-dusted appearance. (The adjoining mountain Arkle shares the same characteristics.)
