For the 8th year running Southend Youth Offending Service from Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has exhibited at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. This year, in partnership with local sponsors, the Youth Offending Service entered two gardens in celebration of the 125 year anniversary of the Borough of Southend-on-Sea. The gardens have a “Southend Theme” and are aptly named “By the Sea” and “Fun on Sea”. They were created from recycled materials to depict two of Southend’s greatest aspects, the seaside and green spaces. The garden will be dismantled and reassembled for display in Priory Park festival in celebration of the Councils 125 years. The gardens were constructed by 15 young people who completed this project as part of their community reparation, under the guidance of Tony Wagstaff, YOS Officer. This year they received the highest award achieved to date. The “Fun on Sea” garden designed by Mr Wagstaff received a Silver Award and the “By the Sea” designed by James Callicott, garden designer, achieved a Silver Guilt. Cllr Ann Holland, Executive Councillor for Culture, Tourism & The Economy, said: “I am so glad the hard work of all the staff and young offenders has been recognised at such a prestigious event. “It is important we work with our young offenders to help them develop new skills, set goals and the go out and achieve them. Giving them this opportunity to help build and set up these two beautiful gardens at such a high profile event is a wonderful way of doing this and will boost their confidence and motivation to achieve.”
