Robert L. Wells, manager of the atomic power department of Westinghouse Electric Corporation, with a scale model of a then-new concept in nuclear reactors, which the company called Organic Moderated Fluid Bed Reactor or OMFBR for short. Similar designs were also explored by the United States Atomic Energy Commission and others around the world, and also go by the name Organic Moderated and Cooled Reactor (OCR). In the cylindrical container, or center part of this model, fuel would be in the form of pellets similar to marbles. Surrounding the container is the reactor vessel. A chain reaction is attained by increasing the fluid flow through the reactor, lifting the pellets and dispersing them through the fluid in the reactor vessel. No large power plants following the design have ever been built.
