A colourful section of the Bubbles street-art mural in Renfield Lane, Glasgow city centre, showing a photorealistic young girl closing her eyes as she blows soap bubbles from a small wand. Her enlarged portrait covers the brick wall, with long blonde hair, pink clothing and carefully painted facial detail giving the work an almost photographic appearance. A second view of the girl appears further along the wall, surrounded by more translucent bubbles. The bubbles are painted with reflective bands of blue, green, pink and white, creating the appearance of light moving across their curved surfaces. Carefully rendered shadows add a three-dimensional effect and make some of the bubbles appear to float beyond the wall. Drainpipes, ventilation grilles, brickwork and street bollards remain visible around the artwork, placing the highly finished portrait within the practical surroundings of a narrow Glasgow backstreet. Bubbles was created in 2019 by Glasgow street artist Rogue One, working with Art Pistol. The wider installation extends across facing walls in Renfield Lane and depicts two young girls playing with bubbles, together with a French bulldog surrounded by the same floating forms. The girls were reportedly based on the daughters of a friend of the artist. The work forms part of Glasgow’s City Centre Mural Trail, which presents large-scale public artworks across walls, lanes and buildings throughout the central area. The Bubbles commission was intended to make Renfield Lane feel more welcoming while using the opposing walls to create an immersive spectacle. The photograph is suitable for editorial themes involving Glasgow street art, public murals, urban regeneration, photorealistic painting, contemporary Scottish artists, cultural tourism, creative placemaking, hidden city-centre attractions and the transformation of commercial backstreets through public artwork.
