It is naturally yet too early for much of a tourist luoveinent, but neverthel(;ss thoir presence is noted. As is well know^n, the Cubans arc enthusiastic devotees of baseball anfl liave developed some very good players, which may be partly accounted for by the fact that it is po.ssible to enjoy this sport all the year round here. The "fans" have been without an official ball ground for some time past, as the former Almendares park at which the games were played was sold to a real estate com- pany, who are laying out a pretentious residential subdivision. While there were no races at Marianao, the ball matches have been held at the race track there, but it is now proposed to buy ground near the former location of the ball park and establish a field there forthatpurpose. During the second intervention the Spanish game of liand ball known as "Jai-Alai" which was played in the Fronton, or Ijuilding built for tliat ])uri)ose, was declared illegal on account of the gambling feature connected with it, and the l)uilding which iiad been vacant for some time was occupied by the Government as a national museum, but this was later closed on account of the edifice being in a very bad condition. Recently efforts have been made to revive this game of Jai-Alai and the old Jai-Alai building has now been rented to a newly organized company and it is reported that the resumption of this sport will again be permitted. This company is called the "Compania de Sport y Fomento del Tourismo, " indicating that its purpose is the development of sport and tourist travel.
