Lanimers is an annual celebration which takes place in June each year and lasts a week. It originated in the 12th century - 1140 is the date given - and has continued in various forms almost interrupted ever since. (There was a period in the mid 19th century when it was banned as becoming too rowdy). It begins on Sunday with the Kirking of the Cornets, continues on Monday with the installation and sashing of the new Cornet - one is elected every year and serves as an ambassador for similar celebrations in the south of Scotland. The Cornet's sash is embroidered in gold thread with his name and the year he is installed and, once a Cornet, always a Cornet. The job of the Cornets is to inspect the old boundary stones once a year and they do half of them on onday and half on Tuesday. On Monday they do it as part of the Perambulation of the Marches, when they lead a procession of anyone who wants to join in and on Tuesday they complete the inspection as part of a Rideout, which is done on horseback. The Rideout ends in the village of New Lanark, when the Queen Elect - a young girl of 11 or 12 years of age - distributes parizes to the winners of various horse races which have taken place. On thursday comes the main procession down the high Street. This consists of decorated floats - called 'lorries' followed by the Royal Court in cars and finally the Queen's car. The culmination of this is the Crowning of the Lanimer Queen. There is entertainment in the afternoon and a further procession and Scottish country dancing displays in the evening. On Friday is the Lanimer Queen's Ball, a private occasion.
