Tomar's first mills. Mills were installed by the river in the 12th and 13th centuries, under the command of the Templars. Of the mills that have lasted to the present day, the oldest are those that are located near the Old Bridge, namely the Alcaide-Mor and the Secretary's, believed to have originated in the thirteenth century. After the extinction of religious orders, the mills had several private owners, including the Manuel Mendes Godinho Society. But they always kept the original moth. With the advent of electricity, D. Pedro de Évora's old mill, built in the mid-15th century, hosted the power plant inaugurated in 1901. Tomar was the fifth city in Portugal to have electricity. The tall brick chimney recalls the period when the plant was operated by steam through a non-existent pipe boiler.
