The Long Sutton Friendly Society was formed in 1818 to provide insurance in the form of welfare benefits for its members, in the main agricultural workers, should they fall on hard times becoming ill and unable to work or were made unemployed. A bereavement benefit was also paid out. These days there are approximately 80 members of the all male society, the annual subscription is £35.00. A bereavement benefit of £100.00 is still paid on the death of a member or a members wife. These days, membership when there is a vacancy is on referral, but not restricted to the village, but a family connection is preferred. The day starts with the church bells being rung at 6.00am and is followed by the annual Roll Call of Members at the village hall. There is no dress code but members are expected to be, “booted and suited and everyone has been persuaded to buy a club tie, ” navy blue with a horizontal red and white narrows stripes. Red, white and blue rosettes are worn. After the Roll Call of Members there is a procession headed by the Banner Bearer, Secretary, Chairman and President of the society followed by the band, in 2019 the Sherborne Town Band and then the members. They parade from the village hall to the Holy Trinity Church for their annual service,
