Dense, metallic native platinum occurs as water-worn placer nuggets in the classic platinum fields near Nizhny Tagil in Russia’s Ural Mountains. These nuggets originate from erosion of ultramafic lodes rich in platinum-group elements and are concentrated mechanically in stream gravels by their extreme density and resistance to chemical weathering. Exhibiting a bright silver-gray metallic luster and malleable character, Ural platinum is historically significant as one of the earliest commercial platinum sources in the world during the 19th century.
