The malpica de cumbre (Carlina xeranthemoides) is endemic to Tenerife. It is a 50-100 cm high, thistle-like shrub, highly branched from the base and with a strong root. It has thin, erect branches covered with a thin greyish-green bark. The leaves are linear, cottony on both sides and have thorns on the margins. The inflorescences are arranged on long stalks with 3-6 flower heads each, and are golden yellow in colour. The leaves are linear or lanceolate, entire, up to 6 cm long and 0.3 cm wide; they are greyish-green in colour with a tomentose-arachnoid (long, fine hairs) on the upper side and abundantly tomentose on the underside; the margin is scattered with spines, while at the apex there is a long, sharp spike. It has inflorescences on long peduncles up to 50 cm long with flowers that are generally grouped between 3-6 flower heads 2-3 cm in diameter and bright yellow in colour. The capitulum is surrounded by long, leaf-like outer involucral bracts and is golden yellow in colour. The fruits are small seeds provided with a hairy, feathery, deciduous hairs that facilitate their dispersal by the wind.
