In the Renaissance, architects and artists returned to draw inspiration from Roman and Greek classicism. With the first archaeological discoveries in Rome and Pompeii many lordships begin collecting ancient works of art and when they build their homes or public buildings or churches, they hire artists, architects who draw inspiration from Roman times. Every prince and pope wants to imitate the pomp of the Roman emperors. Renaissance vaults and ceilings are often coffered which, according to the teachings of the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, serve to lighten the weight of the structure as can be seen, for example, in the Pantheon in Rome. After the Baroque, the classic style, called Neoclassicism, was reborn in the 1700s and lasted until the mid-1800s.
