Berlin witnessed a monumental gathering on February 3, 2024, as approximately 300, 000 demonstrators formed a symbolic "firewall" against right-wing extremism in front of the Bundestag under the banner WeAreTheFirewall. This massive mobilization comes in response to increasing right-wing sentiments and human rights violations within society and politics, advocating for greater tolerance and a robust democracy. The rally was organized by the "Hand in Hand" network, which saw over 1, 700 organizations sign a declaration against right-wing extremism, showcasing a united front from a broad spectrum of society. Notable for their stance against extremism, singers Nina Chuba and Malonda lent their voices to the cause, performing during the assembly and showing solidarity with the movement's goals. According to recent polls, the organizers highlighted the impact of such demonstrations on public opinion, noting a significant decrease in support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. "Our demonstrations are having an effect. The vast majority in Germany stands for a diverse and tolerant society, a majority that the neo-Nazis cannot overcome. We are the firewall. Those who try to gain voters' support by shifting to the right will ultimately only lose, " the organizers stated. The wave of nationwide protests was sparked by investigative journalism platform Correctiv's exposé on a secret meeting of right-wing extremists, including members of the AfD and CDU. In the weeks following the report, massive demonstrations took place across Germany, with people taking to the streets in Berlin and many other cities to protest against the rightward shift in politics. Additionally, today's rally marks the kickoff action for the "Hand in Hand" network, which was established to rally civil society in light of this year's municipal, European, and state elections. The network calls for a commitment to democracy and human rights and against hate and incitement. (Photo by Michael Kuenne/PRESS
