Old town and fishing port of Bermeo in the province of Biscay Basque Country Northern Spain. Bermeo is a municipality on the coast of Bizkaia, in Busturialdeka, founded as a town in 1236. It has 34.12 km2, and in 2016 it had 16, 709 inhabitants. From 1476 to 1602, the town had the title of "Head of Bizkaia", as it was the main city of the Principality of Bizkaia. For this reason, it had several privileges and in the General Assemblies of Bizkaia it had superiority over other towns. Furthermore, whenever the kings went to Bizkaia, they took an oath in the church of Santa Eufemia, as a demonstration of Bermeo's supremacy. Bermeo has a strong fishing tradition, and the town's economy is based on the fishing sector, mostly on fish canning. In addition, it has many attractive places for tourism, including the Doniene of Gaztelugatxe, the Ertzila Tower (Fishermen's Museum), the Doniene gate, the port and the Old Town.
