Germany. The statue of "Jacob Fugger the Rich" stands in the middle of Augsberg, which was his birthplace on 6thMar 1459. He was the son of Hans a weaver and trader. He was well known throughout Europe and provided the Emperor Charles V with the money to bribe the seven electors to make him Holy Roman Emperor in1519. For this he was ennobled and granted the rights over their land including the right to coin their own money. Jacob also increased his wealth ten fold by gaining the right to sell papal indulgences. In 1516 He founded "The Fuggerei" an enclave where the needy citizens of Augsberg could be housed. The rent was 1 rhenischer gilden per year (about 0.88 euros) plus three prayers per day for the current owners of the Fuggerei. It is the oldest social housing project in the world. It still carries on today. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's great grandfather, the mason Franz Mozart lived here between 1681 and 1694. The cost for entry as a visitor today is E4.00, over four time the annual rent. Jacob died on Dec 15 1525 leaving his nephew 2, 032, 652 guilders.
