One of the most vital and useful tools in construction – especially large scale construction – is the large construction crane. There are a lot of different cranes out there, used for building everything from two or three story steel-skeleton buildings to the towering skyscrapers. Cranes can be put up in different ways. One of the most common, especially with the massive tower cranes used in industrial and large scale commercial building construction, is to use a second crane which is taller and lighter to hoist the crane into position. Some cranes can also self assemble, lifting off the ground with hydraulic jacks so the next section of the tower can be set in place underneath. Once the tower crane is constructed, the crane industry starts to show it’s full capabilities. The tower crane is generally equipped with a block of concrete or similar counterweight material on the “short end” of the crane, while the main boom swings out over the construction site, with plenty of reach and heft to move the heaviest i-beams and construction materials anywhere they’re needed. The control cab is located on top of the crane, so it can be used by an operator at eye level with the top of the crane. At this height, of course, a crane operator has to be very skilled at what he or she does – there’s a lot to risk when you’re swinging two tons of steel hundreds of feet above the ground.
