The London Day Surgery Centre (LDSC) is the first in the capital to offer a pain free oral examination to screen for cancer lesions. The non-invasive procedure helps detect abnormalities that can be early indicators of the cancer. The oral lesion identification and marking system comprises of a chemiluminescent light source to identify any possible lesions and a blue dye to mark those lesions identified by technology. First, the patient rinses a solution for a minute. The dental specialist activates a light wand and shines it into the patient’s mouth to examine the oral tissue. The tissue will glow a blue/white colour. Blue liquid is then applied to suspicious areas to visualise the extent of the lesion, and if cause for concern, the patient is referred to a specialist. Mouth cancer kills one person every three hours in the UK because of late detection.
