Seventy children, ages 5-11, worked with a community based arts program and senior citizens at summer camp to build large, processional style puppets and masks out of recycled materials. They used the puppets to educate others about the history of Newtown Creek, the environmental disaster that happened there, the impact of its pollution, and its cleanup and future at a puppet show performed at McGolrick Park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn which is next to Newtown Creek. Beginning in the 19th century, oil refineries and fuel storage containers have spilled anywhere from 17-30 million gallons of oil in Newtown Creek. In 2010, the Department of Environmental Protection declared Newtown Creek a Superfund site, fast tracking its clean-up.
