Altre informazioni:
Grain Tower Battery is located on Grain Spit, at the mouth of the river Medway where it meets the Thames estuary, It was built to defend London & the docks of Sheerness and Chatham. It was completed in 1855 and is similar to earlier Martello Towers being roughly circular, built of solid granite blocks. Between 1910 and 1912 two 4.7 Quick Fire guns were installed to fire on high speed torpedo boats. In 1914 the tower also formed an anchor point for the Medway Boom running across to Sheerness. A heavy chain still wrapped round the tower is the remains of the boom. Wooden posts sticking out of the tower around the chain on the east and west side are the remains of staging used in connection with rigging the boom. Further additions and modifications were made during the Second World War, in particular the large roofed emplacement that supported a twin 6pdr gun. Behind this was a four Story Observation tower and barrack block for the extra garrison.
