Abandoned Central Railroad Station near Michigan Avenue West side Detroit Michigan USA by Carol Dembinsky Dembinsky Photo Associates www.dpaphoto.com Built in 1912, this busy station serviced Detroit and the mid-western United States until 1988. It has been in disrepair since, although there are efforts currently underway to clean refurbish this historic building. The building is of the Beaux-Arts Classical style of architecture, designed by the Warren & Wetmore and Reed and Stem firms who also designed New York City's Grand Central Terminal. The vacant building lies within or near the oldest residential neighborhood in the city known as Corktown. The neighborhood was settled when emigrants came to the United States from Ireland during the Great Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s.
