Americas leading climate change negotiator will urge China to make a commitment to cutting greenhouse gas emissions during meetings in Beijing this week, as the US seeks to avoid the collapse of the next global warming treaty. Todd Stern and a number of the Obama Administrations senior climate experts travelling with him are intent on boosting co-operation between the US and China to convince developing countries to back a new global climate treaty due to be approved in Copenhagen in December. More than 180 nations are working to endorse a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012. Together, China and the US are responsible for 40 per cent of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions. Chinas contribution has skyrocketed in the past two decades and is expected to be twice that of the US by 2030.
