Iraq Kurdistan: During the Anfal, Saddam Hussein's genocidal campaign against the Kurds following the Iraq/Iran war, farmers were forcibly removed from their land and detained in holding centers, away from their homes. They have now returned to their land and face another hidden terror. There is an estimated 10 million land-mines planted in Iraq Kurdistan. Most were laid during the Iraq/ Iran war. No maps exist to show where they have been planted. It costs less than US$5 to buy a land mine. It costs at least US$1, 000 to clear one. Up to 1, 000 people worldwide are still maimed or killed every month. There are now some 100 million such device scattered over the land in 68 different countries around the world.
