Tensions and fights erupted quickly near Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square with police officers receiving foul-mouthed chants, missiles, smoke grenades and flares and with violent clashes with Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists. 23 police officers were reported injured after being kicked, punched or hit by missiles with 113 recorded arrests for a range of offences including breach of the peace, violent disorder, assault on officers, possession of an offensive weapon, possession of class A drugs and being drunk and disorderly. Press photographers and news reporters where frequently targeted with violence. Boris Johnson condemned the “racist thuggery” of the London demonstrators, while the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, described the scenes as “shocking and disgusting” on Sunday.
