Aubrey Valley, is a grassland community located in northern Arizona where biologists with the Arizona Game and Fish Department monitor a captive breeding program for this endangered species. This ferret waits to be fed its ration of prairie dog. It is dependent on prairie dog burrows for shelter and on prairie dogs for food. If given a diet of rabbit or other meat, this ferret does not thrive. This is the most endangered mammal in North America due to eradication of prairie dog towns, the conversion of grasslands to agriculture, distemper, and plague. Up to 99% of the grasslands of North America have been destroyed in just the last 125-150 years. This species was once thought to be extinct, but a small population was rediscovered living in Wyoming in 1981 and captive breeding and reintroduction programs were begun.
